Chapter 23

Jameson held his hand up for a fist bump as they strolled into the party, then turned toward Zoe. “You want a beer?”

“No thanks. I’m not drinking tonight. Driving.” She explained before he could protest.

“Being responsible. Gotta respect that.” Jameson’s hand was warm on her back as he led her through the party. Some she recognized, others she didn’t. They weaved through the crowd to the kitchen, where a large keg sat in the middle of a kiddie pool with ice. Guess the rich didn’t drink differently than the poor on the other side of town.

“I’m only having one.” He grabbed a cup.

On the ride over, Jameson did a lot of talking about nothing. She thought by the time they got here, she’d know something.

“Have you seen Case yet?” She fidgeted with her bracelets.

He shook his head as he poured beer into his cup. “I take it you haven’t either?”

Jameson stared down her shirt when he stood. Zoe hadn’t dressed to seduce, but maybe that would get her the answers she needed quicker. “You’re not drinking alcohol tonight. How about something else? I can get you a soda.”

“Bottled water would be fine.”

His face seemed to falter, then he nodded. “Nothing wrong with that.”

She didn’t take her eyes off him as he reached into the fridge, which was so grimy and gross she wasn’t sure she wanted to eat or drink anything from it. Why hadn’t they hired a housekeeper?

He glanced toward her as he began to unscrew the cap.

“I can open it myself, thanks.” She reached for the drink.

He handed it over.

“It’s so loud down here,” he said as he leaned into her. “You want to go upstairs and talk? I just remembered something.”

“Really?” Zoe didn’t know if this was a line or not, but he wasn’t wrong, it was hard to hear, and if they were talking about Case she needed to be able to hear clearly and focus.

As they walked up the stairs, she glanced around the party. Her heart sank when her eyes met Katie’s. What was she doing here? Katie sneered, looking from Zoe to Jameson. Who was she to judge? Still, Zoe hated being anywhere near Katie. She never hesitated to bully Zoe when she could.

Unlike the rest of the trashed house, the room Jameson brought her to was neat, and it smelled like leather. He walked into the room and sat on the bed.

Zoe hadn’t taken a drink. She hadn’t even opened it yet.

Jameson patted the space beside him.

She sat. “What did you remember?”

“Case can’t stand losing. That’s why he didn’t like it when I told him I liked you.”

She shifted and giggled. Twisting the bottle. “Case has been missing since we… before whatever this is.” She motioned between them.

“I’m hoping to make this more than ‘whatever’. I’ve liked you for a while and Case knew. He was really jealous. He has a mean streak.”

“I’ve ever seen it.”

“He attacked me.” Jameson slid closer to her.

Zoe gasped, hoping that she was convincing enough. “Why did he attack you?”

“He was jealous when I said I wanted to ask you out.
